Precious Commodity is a Lyrical Documentary project focusing on the water pollution in and around the Central Coast and Central Valley of California and along the West Coast of Oregon and Washington States. This series features areas where waste and sewage are discharged and settle into our streams, rivers, and oceans. Each image is unique in that it has been dependent on the choices of lighting at the time of capture, lens choice and angle of view. Natural elements change with the changing of the weather, seasons and daylight, so too will these images throughout the course of documentation.
The intent is to capture abstract images of this pollution that engage viewers by creating a reaction to an initially beautiful scene and then revealing through captions the type of contamination as well as additional information about the region and the source of the pollution, when known. I will work with local California organizations such as local water boards, Surfrider Foundation, The Sierra Club and local newspapers and periodicals, galleries and museums to provide additional context for the work. This will create an opportunity to communicate the importance of cleaning up the water in our neighborhoods and our world.
